Perhaps a better structure and case study is required. Here is a revised question and research method.<br /><br />

<em>How has De Waag Society adapted itself for new media techniques in furthering its goals, and how effective have these methods been?</em><br /><br />

This can be studied by first determining the historical methods De Waag Society used in publishing content and otherwise utilizing the media, then by conducting expert interviews present-day to determine the current methods. Then, people who have previously interacted with De Waag can be polled to determine the effectiveness of those methods.

decoupling form from content is wesch's way of explaining, at least in part, the phenomenon of web 2.0. how else might web 2.0 be explained? how would you explain it?

Marshall McLuhan is famous for stating the “medium is the message,” suggesting that content is somehow less important than the medium—or that the medium is the more interesting of the two. I wonder how he would explain web 2.0?

Thanks Clint. I think you're right that it might be easier to focus on one or two specific physical locations (as Clifford has been suggesting for many groups as well...). Hopefully I will somehow be able to extrapolate from these points to get a general idea of the shape of the general squatting culture (even if there's bound to be some noise).

Clint,
Good post. I'm glad you're plain about what you don't get. Isaac ventriloquized Cassie's angle: she's looking at homelessness in order to capture the other side of squatting: whether in addition to creating a new form of habitus, it disenfranchizes others, in this case the (or a) homeless population.

You might consider the research project in terms of a writing an article for this journal: http://vectors.usc.edu.

This would be a pragmatic answer to the question of what sort of research question emerges from your group's focus on news and mediated information acquisition in A'dam. Write a question that opens onto the article format. Every critical paper/article/book has a thesis: your question would be what the thesis answers.

"Symbiotic synecdoche" is reminiscent of (get ready) "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm": the director William Greaves was trying to get at the psychological aspects that glued societies together in his amazing and eponymous quasi-documentary. The sym/bio in your synecdoche recalls this. Greaves imports the "psycho" into "symbiotaxiplasm," a term used by Arthur Bentley; perhaps you wish to follow up on the Bentley. Greaves discusses some of this in the special features of the Criterion Collection's version. http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=360

Missing in this evolving neologism is a specification of media as its shape. Thus far.

Good work.

I wonder if you have read Marshall McLuhan, of "the medium is the message" (he also said "The medium is the massage," referring to a brain-massage.. Too, Friedrich Kittler'w work in media studies might also be of interest: *Discourse Networks,* for instance.
